Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry & Wedding Rings

A collection of lab-grown diamond rings and fine jewelry set in 18K Gold and Platinum, each independently certified by IGI or GIA.

What Are Lab Diamonds?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It shares the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical properties as a mined stone, the same hardness, the same refractive index, and the same brilliance under light. The only difference is the origin.

Mined diamonds take billions of years to form under intense geological pressure. A lab diamond, by contrast, is produced in a controlled environment using either Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) technology. The result is physically and chemically identical to what comes out of the earth, and even trained gemologists cannot tell them apart without specialised equipment.

Both the GIA and IGI certify lab-grown diamonds to the same grading standards applied to mined stones.

Understanding the 4Cs

The same four criteria that govern any mined diamond apply equally to lab-grown stones.

  • Cut determines how light moves through the diamond — how it reflects, refracts, and disperses into fire and brilliance. It is the most consequential of the four factors, and an Excellent or Ideal grade makes a visible difference regardless of a stone’s origin.
  • Color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tints). For most settings, a grade between D and H will appear white to the eye and represents a sensible balance of quality and price.
  • Clarity describes the presence of inclusions and surface characteristics. For a stone that reads as visually clean, a grade of VS2 or SI1 is typically sufficient and offers good value at most carat weights.
  • Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, not its physical dimensions. Cut quality and shape both influence how large a stone appears on the finger, so carat weight alone does not tell the full story.

Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds

On a like-for-like basis, same carat weight, cut, color, and clarity, a lab-grown diamond typically costs 40% to 60% less than a mined equivalent. In practical terms, that difference often means a larger stone, a higher grade, or a more considered setting within the same budget.

Ethical and Eco-friendly

Ethical & Eco-Friendly

Lab-grown diamonds are the sustainable choice for conscious consumers.

100% Conflict-Free: Fully traceable origins with no links to regional conflicts.

Zero Mining: Protects ecosystems by eliminating earth-disrupting open-pit mining.

Lower Footprint: Replicates a billion-year natural process in weeks, significantly reducing environmental impact.

Identical Quality, Better Price

Identical Quality, Better Price

Get the same luxury for a smarter investment.

Chemically Identical: Lab diamonds share the exact physical and optical properties of mined stones; they are "real" diamonds.

Exceptional Value: Costing 30% to 50% less, lab diamonds allow for larger carats or higher clarity on the same budget.

Indistinguishable: Even expert jewelers require specialized equipment to tell them apart from mined counterparts.

HOW ARE THEY GRADED AND CERTIFIED?

Lab-grown diamonds follow the same grading criteria as mined diamonds. The key difference is that without the need for excavation, grading focuses directly on the stone’s clarity and quality rather than its potential suitability for use in jewelry.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are not simulants or imitations. They are composed of pure carbon in the same crystal structure as mined diamonds, and share identical hardness, refractive index, and optical properties.

Lab-grown diamonds are certified by both GIA and IGI under the same grading standards applied to natural stones. The certificate issued for a lab-grown diamond is identical in format and detail to one issued for a mined stone.

What is the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a diamond simulant?

A diamond simulant is a stone that resembles a diamond but has different chemical and physical properties. Common simulants include cubic zirconia and moissanite.

A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. It is composed of pure carbon in the same crystal structure as a mined diamond, with identical hardness, refractive index, and optical performance. The distinction matters because simulants will behave differently under wear over time, while a lab-grown diamond is as durable and stable as any natural diamond.

How much do lab-grown diamond rings cost in Singapore?

At LeCaine Gems, lab-grown diamond rings start from approximately SGD 1,638 all-in, comprising a stone from SGD 1,238 and a plain 18K white gold solitaire setting from SGD 400. Pricing varies with the choice of shape, grade, carat weight, and setting style. Fancy shapes such as oval and pear are often priced below rounds of equivalent carat weight, which can be a useful way to get more visual size within the same budget.

What is the difference between CVD and HPHT lab-grown diamonds?

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) are the two main processes used to grow lab diamonds. CVD grows the diamond from a carbon-rich gas in a chamber, while HPHT replicates the pressure and temperature conditions found deep within the earth. Both produce diamonds of equivalent quality, and neither process is inherently superior to the other. The grading and certification process is identical for both.

Which cut grade should I look for in a lab-grown diamond?

For round brilliants, Excellent is the recommended minimum. Within that grade, there is meaningful variation, and a Hearts and Arrows verified stone is cut to tighter tolerances than a standard Excellent, producing more directional and consistent light return.

For fancy shapes such as oval or pear, GIA and IGI do not issue a formal cut grade, so the assessment focuses on the length-to-width ratio, depth percentage, and the presence of any optical effects, such as the bow-tie effect that can appear in some ovals. This is best assessed in person at the showroom.

Do lab-grown diamonds lose their brilliance over time?

No. Lab diamonds do not yellow, cloud, or deteriorate with age. They maintain their brilliance and structural integrity indefinitely. Routine cleaning with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush is all that is needed to keep the stone looking its best.

What shapes are available for lab-grown diamond rings?

Round brilliant, oval, pear, emerald, asscher, princess, cushion, marquise, and radiant cuts are all available. Each shape carries different visual characteristics at the same carat weight. Oval and marquise cuts, for instance, face up larger than rounds of equivalent weight, which can make a meaningful difference to the overall presence of the ring.

Are lab-grown diamonds a good choice for engagement rings?

For most buyers, yes. A lab-grown diamond is equally durable and brilliant, and the significant price difference compared to mined stones of the same grade means the budget can go further on carat weight, cut quality, or setting. The fully traceable, conflict-free origin is also an important consideration for many couples. The main area to think through carefully is resale value, as the secondary market for lab-grown diamonds is more limited than for natural stones.

How do lab-grown diamond rings compare to moissanite rings?

Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are both popular alternatives to mined diamonds, but they are different stones with different properties.

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, and has a higher refractive index than diamond, which produces a more colorful fire that some buyers prefer and others find less desirable. A lab-grown diamond, by comparison, behaves optically in exactly the same way as a mined stone. Moissanite is generally less expensive than lab-grown diamonds at equivalent sizes. Both are durable choices for everyday wear.

Can lab-grown diamonds be set in any metal?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds can be set in any metal available for mined diamonds, including 18K yellow gold, 18K white gold, 18K rose gold, and platinum. The choice of metal affects the overall aesthetic and the long-term maintenance of the setting. Platinum is the most durable and suits buyers who prefer a low-maintenance option. 18K white gold achieves a similar look at a lower price point and can be re-rhodium plated over time to maintain its color.
