For a natural 1-carat GIA-certified round in the same grade, you are looking at $7,500 to $9,000 all-in, depending on setting style and metal. Fancy shapes such as oval and pear are often priced 10 to 20 percent below rounds of equivalent weight, which can be a useful way to stretch a budget without compromising on size or quality. Physically and chemically, there is no difference at all. Both are real diamonds with the same hardness, refractive index, and optical properties, and neither a jeweler nor a grading laboratory can distinguish between them without specialised equipment. The practical difference comes down to origin and price. A natural 1-carat G/VS2 round currently costs roughly six times more than a lab-grown equivalent, while lab-grown stones are certified by IGI to the same grading standards as natural diamonds. The one area worth thinking through carefully is resale value, as lab-grown diamond prices have softened considerably in recent years and the secondary market remains limited. If the ring is intended as a long-term heirloom or you are thinking about upgrading in the future, that is a conversation worth having with us before you decide.

For round brilliants, Excellent is the minimum we would recommend, though it is worth knowing there is meaningful variation within that grade. A Hearts and Arrows verified stone is cut to tighter angular tolerances than a standard Excellent, producing stronger and more directional light return, and the difference is genuinely visible when you hold two stones side by side in the showroom. For fancy shapes, GIA and IGI do not issue a formal cut grade, so we look at a combination of factors including the length-to-width ratio, the depth percentage, and the presence of optical effects such as the bow-tie that appears in some ovals and pears. As a general guide, an oval with around 0.70 depth and a minimal bow-tie will outperform a shallower stone with the same colour and clarity grade.

For a round brilliant, a 6-prong solitaire tends to strike the best balance between security and light exposure. A 4-prong gives a cleaner, more minimal look if that suits the aesthetic you have in mind, though it benefits from more regular prong checks over time. For oval and other elongated shapes, we usually recommend either a bezel at the tips or V-tip prongs, since the pointed ends are more vulnerable to chipping without some form of protection. A halo works well across most shapes and adds approximately 0.3 to 0.5mm of visual diameter around the centre stone, which can make a meaningful difference to the overall presence of the ring. For anyone with an active lifestyle or a job that involves frequent handwashing, a low-profile bezel is usually the most practical long-term choice.
